But He Gives More Grace
Oh my dear friends, I can’t begin to list just how often I need more grace. It’s not something that I used to readily admit but it is complete truth. I make some of the same mistakes over and over. They may look a bit different but in my heart, I know the reality of it. It’s not intentional and I can say with a clear conscious that I work hard at keeping some of these sinful tendencies at bay, but it doesn’t work that way. We have no control, what-so-ever, over how perfect we are. We will never make it through a whole week without a slip-up. It’s impossible. It’s never going to happen. It’s an unattainable goal. But you know what? I accept it. I know that is it ok. How can I be so sure? Why aren’t I more stressed out? How can I settle with knowing that no matter what I do, I will NEVER get it right? Here’s the magic words. Because, He gives more grace.
James 4:6 says:
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
John 1:16 says:
For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace
In the NIV, John 1:16 is written as,
Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
There is always room for more forgiveness,
more 2nd chances, more opportunities to try again. God will extend grace in a place where He has already given it, according to John 1:16. He isn’t looking at your track record because 1) He already knew you were going to mess it up again, 2) He is more concerned with your heart.
So here is the common “next question.” So does that mean we don’t ever need to STOP our sinful selves? Is God saying that we are excused from our repetitive bad behaviors? I think that is a useless question. It’s like a diversion throw in by the person trying to disprove God. If you are continuing on in your constant sinful behavior, the one that you KNOW is wrong to be doing. The one that CLEARLY needs to be cut off, then your heart is not in the right place. It isn’t about the sin anymore, it’s about the intention of the person committing the sin.
On the other hand,
when your intentions are pure. Your focus is straight. Your heart is 100% sold out to Jesus Christ and what He represents in your life, then there is room for more grace.
